A story of IANT’s growth: From Living Rooms to Legacy
In the early 1970s, a group of Muslim locals formed the Islamic Association of North Texas (IANT), which convened once a week to offer prayers in different homes in rotation. Following the official founding of the IANT, the organization bought several homes in Grand Prairie, Texas, to provide services and prayers to the greater Dallas/Fort Worth area.The Dallas Central Mosque was built by the IANT in the 1980s after they acquired land near Richardson. Omar Khalidi claims that it was built between 1982 and 1984. The original mosque building was expanded significantly in the 1990s.
The Unique Architecture of IANT:
Wide glass windows that bring in plenty of natural light and a square shape with tan and brown concrete walls make up the Islamic Association of North Texas’s original building, which has a simple but elegant design. There is a tall minaret at the southern corner and a beautiful copper dome over the mosque. With a wider curved copper dome at its entrance, the center later grew by adding a new component that was attached to the northwest side. The building now serves both spiritual and communal purposes by housing a prayer hall, offices, classrooms, a multipurpose hall, a gym, and even a medical clinic. It is more than just a mosque.
A Center of Prayer, Learning, and Community Service:
The Islamic Association of North Texas (IANT) places special prayer meetings during holy seasons like Ramadan, the weekly Friday Jumu’ah, and five daily prayers at the center of its services. IANT is a thriving hub for education and community support. Year-round Qur’anic education programs are available, as is a busy summer school that enrolls more than 250 children in all grade levels. In 2002, The Islamic Association of North Texas established solid groundwork for the next generation by opening its own elementary school.
Along with essential necessities including a food bank, clothes closet, and refugee support network, IANT also provides a large community hall for events and sports, as well as a comprehensive Islamic library for research. A free medical clinic provides access to healthcare.
