Mahabodhi Temple: A Sacred Site of Enlightenment

Mahabodhi Temple is a famous pilgrimage site of Buddhists, this Temple is located in Bihar. It is one of the four major holy sites that is related to Buddha’s physical life. This temple holds a unique importance as it marks the place where Siddhartha Gautama, later known as Buddha attained enlightenment under the Bodhi tree.

For today’s world it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, while it also stands as a testament to the great architectural achievements of ancient India.

History of Mahabodhi Temple

The original Mahabodhi Temple was built by the Great Emperor Ashoka from the Maurya Dynasty, in the 3rd Century BCE. By the dawn of his life, it is believed that Emperor Ashoka embraced Buddhism and visited Bodh Gaya. He wished to commemorate the shrine and with this desire in his heart he built this Mahabodhi temple.

The Grand temple that we see today is the result of multiple renovations that it went through over the centuries in different time periods. The major reconstruction work that took place was during the Gupta period, 4th to 6th century.

Architectural Features

Mahabodhi Temple holds exceptional architectural work that portrays mastery of Ancient Indian methods and craftsmanship.

Intricate carvings have always been a special feature of India, and this you can witness here in this temple as well, with symbolic representations. The temple’s exterior wall showcases scenes from Buddha’s life. The carvings have also been made in floral patterns and images of Buddha in various Mudras.

Story

Siddhartha’s search for his Truth was supported with commitment and a deep longing for freedom from bondage of human sufferings, he wanted to understand the true nature of existence in a world where everyone suffered in one way or the other.

One Night, it is believed that with conviction he sat under a Bo Tree, determined to receive his answers, for days he stayed there unmoved, when finally, under the same Bodhi tree, he understood liberation and attained his title as Buddha.

Main Temple

The main temple stands with a great height of 55 meters, it’s a tall building with a structure that looks pyramidal with a square base and a slender and a tapering tower known as shikhara.

The top of the tower is modestly adorned with a “Chhatra” much like an umbrella structure that represents royalty and protection.

Pilgrims often walk around the temple in a ritual known as pradakshina.

The temple complex also houses smaller shrines and stupas built over centuries by various Buddhist communities.

Bodhi Tree

Very close to the Temple is the Sacred Bodhi tree, which is the descent of the original tree under which Buddha meditated and attained enlightenment. One of the reasons pilgrims visit this place is to meditate close to this tree and offer prayers in hope to bless their spiritual journey.

Vajrasana

Great importance has been given to the exact spot where Buddha sat and meditated, this specific place is called Vajrasana, which literally means the unshakable posture. There in the same spot a rectangular platform has been built, made from polished sandstone.

This slab was built by Great Emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BCE.

Interior of the Sanctum

The interior sanctum has a huge gilded statue of Buddha in the Bhumisparsha Mudra, which symbolises the exact moment of his enlightenment.

Annual festivals and religious significance

The Mahabodhi Temple serves as a center for meditation, teachings, and religious ceremonies. The temple hosts the annual Buddha Purnima festival, commemorating Buddha’s birth, enlightenment, and leaving of the physical realm. Thousands of people gather here which becomes a memorable experience for anyone. Thousands of Pilgrims can be seen chanting prayers and performing rituals which fills the environment with high spiritual energy.
