Art Deco appears to be a style for the contemporary world. Art Deco which is popularly short for original French term Arts décoratifs, it literally means “Decorative Arts”.
Art Deco design emerged in France in the early 20th century, and in fact it appeared as a revolutionary design across the Globe. With its sleek lines, geometric patterns, and luxurious finishes Art Deco formed a unique style for Indian architectures that made indelible mark on India’s architectural landscape from the streets of Mumbai to the colonial buildings of Kolkata.
Art Deco was introduced in India around 1930s, largely as an influence of western culture spreading over the land. However, this foreign style was depicted through a local lens which created a distinct blend of modern and Indian motifs.
Art Deco in India stands out for its use of vibrant colours and bold geometric patterns. Art Deco can be considered for bringing the flavour of simplicity. However, this is not the only city, Kolkata also boasts some remarkable examples of Art Deco buildings. The New Empire Cinema and the Metro Cinema are among the city’s best-preserved examples.
